What is Parkour?
Parkour is a training discipline that teaches you how to move through an environment quickly and efficiently without the assistance of equipment. In practice, it focuses on developing the fundamental attributes required for movement, including functional strength and fitness, balance, spatial awareness, agility, coordination, precision, control, and creative vision.
Although the roots of parkour can be found in military obstacle course training and martial arts, it is also the basis of action sequences in your favorite TV shows or films, where traceurs (practitioners of parkour) are seen performing stunts and landing without injury.
While the word “parkour” comes from the French word “parcours,” which translates to, “the way through,” or “the path,” it’s important to note that Parkour isn’t about following one single path to reach a destination. Instead, it’s a practice in learning how to progress forward efficiently with an awareness of your environment, others, and your own personal limits - whatever they may be.
One of the advantages of this training style is that it is ideal for all ages and abilities. Parkour is a sport that encourages self-improvement and overcoming physical and mental obstacles. It is also highly cooperative rather than competitive, so practitioners learn from and encourage one another, creating a strong community that trains together while having fun!
